The curators Rodrigo Naves and the artist Elisa Bracher assembled around 70 images of houses at the Favela da Linha [Slum of the Line], in São Paulo, and in tens of cities at the Northeast of the country. The visual artist Elisa Bracher, known by her large scale engravings and sculptures, had her first photographic show ´The city and its borders´ held in September 27, 2008 at the Museu da Casa Brasileira. The exhibition, produced by Expomus, displayed around 70 images of houses at the Favela da Linha, in São Paulo, and in cities of the Brazilian Northeast, where some of the slum´s inhabitants were born.

Selected by the art critic Rodrigo Naves and the artist, Elisa´s photos, produced in 2007, have an anthropological and social character, based on a comparative documentation of aesthetic and structural issues showed by means of precarious constructions. The images were amplified, measuring 100 x 70 cm, and printed with mineral pigments on tarnished handcrafted paper, made out of cotton.

During five years, Elisa Bracher kept an intense bond with the residents at the Favela da Linha, located at the CEAGESP surroundings. The contact came from the vicinity between the community and her atelier, that started to call the attention of the inhabitants. Then, the Ateliê Acaia was founded – a place to socialize, offering activities, which through art teaching help children and youngsters, who live in the area, as well as their families.

With the growing real state development of the district, the inhabitants at the Favela da Linha, who have lived there for approximately 40 years, are suffering great pressure to leave the area by building companies and the public administration. In this context, the artist made a photographic survey of the houses to verify the quantity of resident families, as part of a movement for better housing conditions.

According to Rodrigo Naves, the exhibition happened almost by chance: “The records aimed to document the housing situation, but Elisa, while observing the images, found out the revealing aspect of the photos and the possibilities that were opened for her work”, he said.

The artist´s profound knowledge on engraving technique gave the photos a very close aspect of print material, that is beyond mere documental records. The outcome is a sensible work, that allows us to sense people´s experiences of life, emotions and sociability, even without a person showing up in the images.
