O Museu de Arte do Espírito Santo “Dionísio del Santo” (MAES), no centro de Vitória, apresentou de 7 de maio a 27 de julho de 2008 a exposição “Vistas do Brasil”, mostra que reuniu 36 obras da Coleção Brasiliana – Fundação Estudar, pertencentes ao acervo da Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo.
Com curadoria de Carlos Martins e Valéria Piccoli, a mostra apresentou desenhos, pinturas e gravuras que retratam as paisagens do Brasil do século XIX, produzidos por artistas que aqui viveram ou que visitaram o país na época.
O interesse por representar artisticamente as paisagens começou a crescer na Europa do século XVII, à medida que a sociedade se tornava mais urbana e que se definiam os limites dos países europeus.
Mais do que imagens agradáveis aos olhos, as paisagens trazem informações sobre o caráter do local representado e sua época.
Com destaque para vistas rurais com presença de personagens indígenas e cenários ícones do Rio de Janeiro, a mostra reuniu diferentes estilos artísticos. A seleção teve início pelos desenhos e aquarelas, feitos a partir da observação direta da natureza, como meio de conhecer o mundo. Eram materiais preparatórios, utilizados posteriormente pelos artistas na elaboração da obra final, como os esboços do alemão Johann Moritz Rugendas, que foram transformados em gravuras para a ilustração de seu livro “Viagem pitoresca através do Brasil” e também estão no papel de parede panorâmico “Vistas do Brasil”, gravado pelo francês Jean-Julien Deltil, presente nessa exposição.
Nas pinturas, as paisagens surgiram como uma alternativa de refúgio à expansão da vida urbana nas cidades européias. Além de registrar a geografia de um território, a pintura de paisagem também apresenta uma natureza idealizada, de uma maneira afetiva e sentimental, principalmente em meados do século XIX, quando o romantismo alterou a maneira de se perceber o mundo e, portanto, de representá-lo artisticamente.
A exposição mostrou ainda diversas gravuras, gênero artístico que fez as paisagens se tornarem ainda mais difundidas. Freqüentemente, desenhos e pinturas transformados em gravuras eram reunidos em livros de viagens e serviam de inspiração para a produção de muitos objetos de decoração, como peças de porcelanas.
Na mostra, foram apresentadas 12 gravuras do suíço Johann Jacob Steinmann, como “Largo do Paço” e “Vista de N.S.da Glória e da Barra do Rio de Janeiro” (gravadas por Friedrich Salathé). Seus trabalhos revelam não apenas a importância que o gênero teve no século XIX, mas que ainda se faz presente nos dias de hoje.
“Vistas do Brasil” teve organização geral da Expomus, patrocínio da Oi e apoio cultural do Oi Futuro por intermédio da Lei de Incentivo à Cultura do Governo Federal.
