Na história, tudo se constrói a partir do olhar. Ao longo do tempo, diante das riquezas e fascínios do Brasil, centenas foram os viajantes estrangeiros a retratar suas múltiplas visões sobre a terra descoberta pelos portugueses. No século XIX, muitos destes observadores europeus dedicaram-se, com afinco, à tarefa de recontar a seus conterrâneos, por meio de pinturas e relatos, suas experiências singulares em solo brasileiro.
Exemplos desta fascinante arte de mostrar ao velho continente as impressões detalhadas sobre o novo mundo puderam ser apreciados pelo público na Casa Fiat de Cultura entre 22 de outubro a 18 de dezembro de 2008. A exposição Olhar Viajante, reuniu 184 obras, entre pinturas, aquarelas e gravuras, capazes de resumir a experiência dos viajantes europeus que por aqui passaram no século XIX.
Os trabalhos expostos – que integram a Coleção Brasiliana/Fundação Estudar, composta por mais de 500 obras de viajantes europeus, recentemente incorporadas à coleção da Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo – são um convite à reflexão sobre a contribuição estrangeira para a arte brasileira. Afinal, são os artistas viajantes do século XIX os responsáveis por introduzir no país, à época, o consagrado gênero da pintura de paisagem, que teve importante papel na formulação de um projeto artístico nacional durante o segundo império.
Com curadoria de Carlos Martins e Valéria Piccoli, Olhar Viajante foi dividida em três núcleos: O Rio de Janeiro e a Corte, Registros de Viajantes e Paisagens do Brasil. Pela primeira vez, representativa seleção da Coleção Brasiliana esteve em Minas Gerais, uma grande oportunidade para o público mineiro conhecer uma significativa produção de arte brasileira do século XIX, o que não existe em coleções públicas de Minas Gerais. Os acervos de arte de Ouro Preto (MG), por exemplo, são constituídos por obras anteriores ao “olhar viajante”, da fase colonial do Brasil.
Entre os destaques da exposição estavam as pinturas do francês Jean-Baptiste Debret, um dos fundadores da Academia Imperial de Belas Artes, no Rio de Janeiro, e os trabalhos do alemão Johann Moritz Rugendas, que realizou o percurso entre o Rio de Janeiro e Minas Gerais e, ao voltar à Europa, publicou um livro de viagens com interessantes estudos sobre o modo de representação da natureza.
